Col del Sas

Col del Sas vineyard

Located in Saccol, in the municipality of Valdobbiadene, this vineyard sits directly on the border of the renowned Cartizze area, sharing its distinctive characteristics.

The vineyard stands on a small hill—the Col del Sas (Hill of Rocks)—which, as the name suggests, features a high concentration of outcropping bedrock. It is a hillside vineyard with a south-southwest exposure, characterized by minimal soil depth, where the vines develop their roots deep into the fissures between the stones and limestone rocks. This soil structure makes installing support posts for the vines extremely challenging, as they can only be placed where sufficient depth is found. Consequently, the vineyard is highly irregular, with unique shapes and geometry.

The small plot was replanted in 2018, reorganizing rows that were no longer yielding adequate production, primarily due to vine trunk diseases such as Flavescence dorée, which had spread rapidly in this area. Today, the vineyard is more uniform while maintaining its signature trait: loose-bunched grapes and moderate yields. This imparts a unique aromatic and flavor intensity to the resulting base wines. Thanks to the high limestone content of the soil, this area lends great elegance and savoriness to the wines. The training system used is the classic Doppio Capovolto."
